Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff from 5 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 until 8 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2012, in honor of Marine Corps Master Sgt. Travis Riddick, 40, formerly of Centerville, Iowa. Master Sgt. Riddick was killed in action Saturday, January 21, 2012, in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan.

US Flags to Half-Staff in Iowa in Honor of Marvin J. Steinford
Iowa Govenor Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa to be flown at half-staff from 8:00am to 5:00pm on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in honor of Staff Sergeant Marvin J. “Steiney” Steinford. On March 24, 1945, Staff Sgt. Steinford, then 22 years-old, left Amendola, Italy with a B-17 “Flying Fortress” on a bombing mission bound for Berlin, Germany. Staff Sgt. Steinford’s plane was damaged by German anti-aircraft fire and he disappeared behind enemy lines in Hungary. On November 16, 2004, Hungarian authorities notified United States Defense Attaché (USDAO) in Budapest of potential American serviceman remains in the city of Zirc, Hungary. Upon further examination of the remains, they discovered identification tags that bore Staff Sgt. Steinford’s name. Memorial services for Staff Sgt. Steinford will be Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Staff Sgt. James Justice
Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff in honor of an Iowa Army National Guard soldier who was killed in Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. James Justice, of Grimes, died of enemy small arms fire on April 23 while helping to rescue the crew of a helicopter that made a hard landing. Another Iowa soldier, Spc. Zachary Durham, of Des Moines, was injured.
In his order on Monday, Branstad says all U.S. flags and state flags under the control of Iowa are to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Gov. Terry Branstad has ordered all flags in Iowa be flown at half-staff beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011 until 8 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011 in honor of Sgt. Brent Maher, 31, formerly of Honey Creek, Iowa, and Spc. Donald Nichols, 21, formerly of Shell Rock, Iowa. Gov. Branstad has cleared his public schedule on both Friday and Saturday in order to attend each service.
Sgt. Maher was killed during a mounted patrol in Paktya Province, Afghanistan on Monday, April 11, 2011.
Sgt. Maher is survived by his wife, Brenna, three children, mother and step-father, brother, and grandparents. He will be laid to rest Friday, April 22, 2011.
Spc. Nicols was killed during a mounted patrol in Lagham Province, Afghanistan on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.
Spc. Nichols is survived by his fiancé, Chelsey Bliss, parents, two brothers, two grandmothers and grandfather. He will be laid to rest Saturday, April 23, 2011.
The Governor’s directive applies to all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state. H.R. 692, signed in 2007, requires federal government agencies in the state to comply with the Governor’s Executive Order that the U.S. flag be flown at half-staff in the event of the death of a member of the Armed Forces.
Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and upon all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
The U.S. flag flown over the state Capitol on the day of the funerals will be presented to Sgt. Maher and Spc. Nichols’ family at a later date, along with a proclamation honoring them.

Flags to Half staff in Iowa in Honor of Sgt. Eric Stein
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad ordered all flags flown at half-staff to honor a Keokuk County deputy killed in the line of duty.
Sgt. Eric Stein, 39, died when he was assisting with emergency response to a standoff with a man at a house near Sigourney, Iowa on April 4, 2011.
Police say Jeff Krier, 53, fired shots at officers from inside his residence. Several hours later, Krier exited the house. Police say he was armed and officers fired on him. Krier died at the scene.
Krier reportedly had a history of mental illness.
Flags will be at half-staff at all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout Iowa from noon Friday, April 8, 2011 to 8 a.m. Monday, April 11.
Branstad also planned to sign a proclamation declaring Stein a hero in the state of Iowa.
Stein was from What Cheer, Iowa. His funeral was set for Saturday, April 9.
